Britain's Best Home Cook is VERY different and I thought it was really slow until I caught on. It truly is a show about HOME cooks who want to show their skills. The judges EXPECT a home cook to cook like at home, no fancy stuff, give your best. Contestants support and help each other, they share ideas and recipes. They are given cook books the night before, to study, they each have their own pantry of complimentary food items for the challenge.

The cooks, now very happily sharing a house, need to put friendships aside as they face this week's competitive challenges. In this first episode, the cooks have an hour and a half to prepare their ultimate burger with at least two sides designed to showcase their individual personality. The patties and fries sparkle with variety and influences as cooks rustle up a Welsh inspired rarebit burger, Indian spiced patty and pakoras, Nigerian suya spiced beef, Asian shredded beef in a bao bun and a plethora of cheeseburgers.
I cherish the moments in the final when Mary Berry said my dessert was “to die for” and Chris Bavin stated that my Beef Wellington was one of the best he has ever tasted. But equally it was such a buzz when Pippa and Dipa got praise – as indeed it was throughout the competition when a fellow cook had delivered a knock-out dish. In our final challenge – a two-course dinner party – I could not have been happier with how my dishes turned out. And it was wonderful that Dipa’s and Pippa’s dishes went to plan, too. Kate Garraway, British journalist and news presenter, revealed that she has hired a cook to spend time and take care of her husband Derek, who returned home after prolonged illness post-Covid.
It was again built in the nearby Park Street, where it serves the customers till date. Aslam's recipe for the famous and mouth-watering Chicken Tikka Masala has since travelled across the world and his legacy will last long. Sharing the house with my fellow cooks made the process more of a homely affair for sure, and was a great way to discuss our individual triumphs and hiccups of an evening, and support each other throughout.
It's a pleasant slow friendly pace so slow it's a little hard to stay awake and then I have to start over. Tonight the quarter-finalists have 2 and a half hours to prepare their ultimate sharing feast with at least four dishes designed to showcase their individual personality. The cooks are up against it as they try to impress the judges with four complementary dishes that must come together as a complete meal.
